The World of Books {Reading with Babies}

Books. They can be one of the first educations a baby has. They can form the first memories a baby has. They can sculpt a baby's first creative streaks. They can show a baby new worlds they could only dream of. But how do we know what books are appropriate for what age?

This is Mummy A, from Squishels and Me, here to take you on a wander through the kinds of books out there for your baby to explore. Come with me, and maybe find a new world to explore along the way.

There are many things books can teach babies.

 

There are books that can help develop and finetune a baby's eyesight.

For example, high contrast books with distinctive black and white patterns. We borrowed this one (Art for Babies) from the library and Squishels loves it.  

 

 

There are books that can teach about different textures- rough, smooth, fluffy, bumpy.

We have a touch and feel book based off the Hungry Caterpillar that brings delight to Squishels face as she explores the book with her hands.

 

There are books that can teach numbers, or words.

The hungry caterpillar does this brilliantly!

 

There are books that can teach concepts such as opposites, young and old, animals, foods and nature.

 We love Julia Groves’ animal babies series in teaching the infant and adult words for different animals living in different environments.

 

There are books that can teach social skills, manners and social acceptance.

“Say Please, Little Bear” and other similar books are great at making manners commonplace in a household.

 
There are books that can teach emotions, and emotional regulation.

We love “In my heart” and the “When I’m Feeling” series by Trace Moroney to teach basic emotional concepts.

 

There are books that can teach rhyme and rhythm to a baby.

 “The Owl and the Pussycat and other nonsense rhymes” was borrowed from the library recently and has put a certain rhythmic spring in our step. 

 

There are books that can teach the rise and fall, lilting intonation of a language.

Dr Seuss is the favourite in this house for the teaching of the concept of language.

There are books that can teach the flow of a story.

 

There are books that can show a parent or grandparent's love towards the child.
I love reading “I am wherever you are” to Squishels when I’ve been struggling with her big emotions and needs (or just being a grump) and just need a breather. 

 

And then, there are just the books that babies just love to hug and carry around and sleep with.

The “Hug-A-Bible” is a fantastically cuddly book for bubs to snuggle up with at night.

Squishels loves to read and explore the world of books.
