The Best Sensory Play Idea

Squiggles is absolutely obsessed with baking. She's constantly cooking up a storm in her sandpit kitchen, her play kitchen or our real kitchen. It just seems to be the thing she loves at the moment. It also happens to be the perfect activity for my little sensory seeker.

When we bake in our kitchen the girls get to explore all of their senses. Squiggles loooves to grease the cake tin and even Bubbles, my sensory avoider, has learnt to love the feel of the butter squidging between her fingers as she greases the cake tin.

Often, I will catch Bubbles or Squiggles running their fingers through the flour container-just enjoying the sensation.

The girls get to work their muscles and practice crossing their midlines (essential skills for when they write) as they mix the mixture and transfer it into the pan.

And of course they get to smell and taste the yummy treats they create!

The girls make many things. Baking bread is a real favourite as they can play with and shape it like they do playdough! In the photos above, the girls were making my Godmother's yummy chocolate slice. The recipe is below just in case you'd like to try it! Be sure to share it with us on Instagram @squigglesandbubbles or Facebook if you do!

Robbie's Chocolate Slice
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups Self Raising Flour
2 dessertspoons cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup coconut
125g margarine
1 egg

Method:
Mix the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl.
Melt margarine, beat egg and add to the dry ingredients.
Mix well.
Press into greased and floured tin.
Bake for 15minutes in a moderate oven.
When cool, ice with chocolate icing and sprinkle with coconut or 100s and 1000s.
Cut into squares.

Icing: Mix a small amount of icing sugar (3/4 to 1 cup) with a couple of teaspoons of cocoa with a tiny amount of boiling water until it's a smooth and thick mixture.

Robbie's tips: Depending on the size of your slice tin try the thickness of the slice. You can use a lamington tray or smaller.

  1. I never even thought about how cooking with the kids is a total sensory experience. No wonder my daughter is always wanting to help in the kitchen -- she is my seeker. I need to set more time aside for some baking in the future.
