Welcome back to another post in our Playful Baby series! This year we are hosting a new series about none
other than baby play! From playspaces to heuristic play and even paint…
we want you to feel comfortable playing with your baby. By the
end of the next 12 months you will have an arsenal of baby play ideas!
You will have the knowledge and
understanding to continue learning and growing with your baby through
play. This month we are sharing sensory play ideas!
In my post 5 Sensory Explorations for Baby, I explain the importance of sensory play: Sensory play is a vital part of your baby's life-their little brain needs to be constantly stimulated by sensory experiences to develop. That doesn't mean that if you're not constantly creating and providing your baby with, super amazing, Pinterest worthy activities, that your baby's brain won't develop. Whilst those activities can be awesome fun and there are those of us (guilty!) who thrive on providing activities like that for our little ones; for babies all play experiences are sensory. Your baby is naturally curious and from the time they were born they've been using their senses to explore the world around them. You can enhance their sensory exploration and in turn help their brain development by doing very simple things.
Today, I want to share with you what a fantastic sensory experience a simple, family trip to the beach can be for a baby. I mean, just stop and think about it. What smells do you associate with the beach? What do you see? Touch? Hear? Taste? Isn't it just one big sensory experience?!
We visited the beach as a family on the last day of summer. We only stayed for an hour but in that time JB had a ball exploring all the different sensory play the beach had to offer and I didn't have to prepare anything!
She felt the sand on her feet, hands...and pretty much her whole body!
She discovered the sensation of having your feet sink in wet sand.
She tasted the sand...and again...and again :/
She smelt the salty sea air
She felt the sea breeze on her face and the wind in her hair
She watched and heard the waves crashing on the beach
She saw and heard the seagulls, people, boats and ski biscuits
She explored the different textures of seaweed, sand, shells and rocks
And ofcourse she splashed in the water (the beach we went to had a shallow, little creek/puddle area away from the ocean with warmer water that Numnut and I enjoyed warming our feet in whilst the girls splashed within arm's reach)
As I said before, sensory play is a vital part of your baby's life and it really is easy to provide your baby with opportunities to engage in natural sensory play-you just have to remember to slow down and let them!
Don’t forget to post pictures up on Facebook or Instagram of

Please always supervise your
infant/child at play. Please stay within arms reach and never leave
infants/children unattended. You know you're infant/child best, use
your own judgement-considering your infant/child's temperament, habits,
behaviour and development before you play with a new play medium.
