Rain Paint-Scented Watercolours

We've been huge fans of Rain Paint here ever since I came across the idea on Growing a Jeweled Rose and Housing a Forest's Play inspired by Nature series. We've experimented many times with the 5 different ways Tammy explains on her Rain Painting post. Imagine how excited I was when I saw Allison from Learn Play Imagine had yet another idea of how to create Scented Watercolour Paint with rain!

Unfortunately, it's really hard to find Allison's main ingredient where I live so I decided to see what would happen if I substituted jelly crystals instead. The end result is nowhere near as good as Allison's paint but it still smells divine and is a great process based art activity to have up your sleeve for a rainy day!

Scented Water Colour Rain Paint Directions
You will need:
2tbs of jelly crystals in your chosen colour
A container of some sort (baby food jars, small glasses and muffin tins all work great)
A rainy day
Optional extra: food dye

How to create and play:
Place your jelly crystals into your container
Place your container in the rain
Wait for the rain to fill your container (This can take awhile! If you want to, you can cheat a little and just add some water from the tap.)
Give your paint a good stir and then allow your little one to paint as they desire!

As I said before, this recipe does not yield a paint as vibrant as Learn Play Imagine's, the above picture will show you just how subtle the colours are. For a more vibrant paint (like the picture below), just add a few drops of food dye.

Squiggles and Bubbles both love this activity. Last year while I was studying, we would quite often pop the paint out in the rain before I ran out the door-giving them something to do with my dad throughout the day.

Just a little warning: If you do add the food dye and your little one is anything like Squiggles, prepare for dyed fingers!

So what do you think? Will you be creating some Scented Watercolours next time it rains?
